Vivianite is named after the discoverer of the crystal, John Henry Vivian who was both a politician and mineralogist from England. The first documented discovery was in 1817 when John found the mineral in Cornwall, England. Since then, the crystal has been found in several places, a common place of discovery is Bolivia, but several finds of this crystal have also been made in the USA, Russia, Ukraine and England.
Vivianite is a crystal that often bears green and blue colors but has a translucent or white tone when newly formed. The color changes with the help of the light and the sun's rays, which affect the material through oxidation and give the crystal its beautiful clear green/blue color, when exposed to the light for a longer time, the Vivianite can get a stronger color with purple tones, almost black.
Vivianite contains several minerals and is formed by the combination of iron, water and phosphate. Phosphate is a substance that i.a. found in the body of humans and animals, e.g. teeth and bones, and just like some other crystals, this has been formed with the help of fossils in iron-rich and humid areas.
