Agate is a versatile and uniquely banded gemstone said to bring courage, strength, and balance between yin and yang. It is claimed to protect the wearer from stress and negativity, making it popular for meditation and personal growth to stabilize one's inner self. The stone is connected to all chakras.
Physically, agate is composed of layers of chalcedony, quartz, and other minerals, which create the bands typical of the stone. Since it is relatively soft, it is easy to shape into jewelry. Every stone has a unique pattern and the colors vary naturally, although the stone is sometimes artificially dyed into very vibrant shades.
The stone was discovered around 315 BC in Sicily by the Greek naturalist Theophrastus, who named it after the Achates River. Today, agate is one of the most common stones on the market and can be found in countries such as Brazil, India, Egypt, Uruguay, Scotland, and Finland.
