Rainbow Obsidian is a stone that contains a beautiful shimmer in varying colors. This shimmer appears in the stone under the glass cover when light is reflected at different angles, the stone is also named after these beautiful shifts in several of the colors of the rainbow.
Obsidian has emerged through volcanic eruptions where lava with a high silica content quickly solidified and in combination with water and air has formed a kind of glass from the mass. The process of forming Obsidian takes place over a longer period of millions of years and different varieties can be found in several places around the world. Rainbow Obsidian is formed when Magnetite combines with the lava mass during growth and together forms this stone with wave-like inclusions in beautiful shades, mainly in purple, green, metal/gold and blue.
Although Rainbow Obsidian has been found in several locations, it is a unique and rare variety. It has been found primarily in Jalisco, Mexico where it is found in higher quality and is often sought after by jewelry makers and experienced stone collectors.
