Obsidian has emerged through volcanic eruptions where lava with a high silica content quickly solidified and in combination with water and air has formed a kind of glass from the mass. Snowflake Obsidian bears a beautiful unique pattern with a black base and gray/white spots called spherulites. These patterns appear in the stone when cristobalite combines with the lava mass as it cools.
