History & Facts

Marcasite is a beautiful stone with a metallic, shiny and sparkling appearance that can easily be mistaken for Pyrite. Despite its similarity to Pyrite, this is a separate crystal that belongs to the orthorhombic crystal system while Pyrite belongs to the cubic one. Marcasite consists of iron sulphide minerals but is not as hairy as Pyrite and has a finer brittleness. The crystal is often made up of smaller discs that form scattered crystals (similar to rooster's combs).

It is still unclear when Markasite was discovered but is known as a crystal that has been around for hundreds of years and was used in Egypt and by the Indian tribes. For a long time this crystal was called Pyrite because of its similarities, only in 1814 when Wilhelm Haidinger (Austrian mineralogist) described the stone, the differences between the crystals were discovered and Marcasite was proven as a separate crystal.

The crystal's name comes from the Persian order "marcasita" which can be translated as "the stone of sulphur". The name is a name that is also used to name jewelery even if the jewelery itself does not contain the stone. Markasite is also known by the names "silver drop", "Inca stone" and "radiant pyrite".

Marcasite has found locations all over the world and can be found i.a. Russia, USA, Canada, Tanzania, Bolivia, France and many more places. Despite this, the crystal is an uncommon stone on the market and sought after by stone collectors.

Note! Marcasite is a brittle crystal that can easily crack if handled carelessly and is sensitive to moisture.
