Fairy stone, also called Älvsten, the goddess's stone or Menilite Opal, is a stone that was formed over millions of years in Northern Quebec through a composition of various minerals, including of calcium carbonate. Through fossils, its minerals and temperature conditions, it has been sculpted and formed a smooth fine surface and given a unique appearance. Fairy stone has several locations and can vary in design, as well as shades in brown/white tones. *The stones with lighter tones in brown are also called "Liver Opal"
The stone has been used in several cultures but was first named by the Algonquin tribe in Quebec, named after its alleged magical powers and association with magical beings. Despite this, it was originally found in Canada by sailors.
