History & Facts

Axinite is an incredibly rare crystal that is very hard to find. It consists of calcium and aluminum borosilicate and has a brownish tone with a purple light that varies in its shades depending on the light. The crystal was named by Rene Just Haüy in 1797 despite having been found several years earlier. When Axinite was discovered, it was first thought to be another variant of Tourmaline and it was given several temporary names attached to Tourmaline until it was discovered that it was a new type of stone. The name of the crystal comes from the Greek and means "axe" and has arisen after its leaf-like shapes.
