History & Facts

Purple Agate is basically a natural/brown Agate that has been dyed for a more attractive appearance. Although it is a colored stone, this is a true crystal at its core.

Agate is a gemstone closely related to Onyx and Chalcedony. Chalcedony is one of the substances that Agate is made up of together with quartz and other minerals. Agate is a compact stone, but despite that, it is not that hard, it is formed of lamellae/discs, which creates layers and stripes in the stone. These stripes are typical of Agate and often what helps to identify the stone. Thanks to the crystal's softness, it can be easily shaped, which means that it is often found on the market in jewelry form.

Agate can vary greatly in its appearance and always has unique patterns that are unlike any other. It can also naturally vary in color depending on which minerals are in the stone, the origin and the quality, but is also a stone that is colored in some cases to get a more attractive appearance. These colored stones often have an obvious and unnatural color such as Ceris pink, bright blue or strong green.

The first documentation about the crystal was made approx. 315 years BC. by the Greek naturalist Theophrastus who found the stone. He named the crystal after the river Achates, which is now called Dirillo and is located in Sicily, which was also where he made the find. Nowadays, agate can be found in several countries such as in Brazil, India. Egypt, Uruguay, Scotland and Finland.

Agate is one of the most common stones on the market and is considered relatively cheap as the supply is so large, hence this crystal is often found in a stone collector's collection.
