Apache tear is a form of obsidian formed from magma (volcanic glass), but unlike black obsidian, this is clear when held up to the light. The rock allegedly got its name from a tragic event in Arizona where the original inhabitants of the Apache tribe were attacked by soldiers and many of them fell down a cliff. The tears from the women in the tribe are said to have flowed down the mountain where the clear variant of black Obsidian was then found. It is said to be the combination of the tears and the stone that made it clear and transparent different from the classic black Obsidian.
Apache toes have been used for thousands of years and often in jewelry or as sharpened tools.
