History & Facts

Bornit goes by several names such as Peacock Stone, Peacock Cups or Chalcopyrite. The names come from its beautiful appearance that can resemble peacock feathers with a sparkling, shimmering exterior in all the colors of the rainbow with a predominance of blue and purple.

The stone is related to chalcopyrite/copper pyrites and contains copper sulphide, which means that Bornite has a rich content of copper in particular. The appearance and colors can vary greatly depending on its content and iron content.

The first documented discovery of Bornite was made in 1725 at a mine in the Czech Republic. But it was only in 1845 that it was named and was named after the researcher Ignaz von Born. The stone can now be found all over the world in copper mines and has been found in larger volumes in Canada, Mexico, the USA, Tasmania and Peru etc.
